Luke 11:17 Meaning
Luke 11:17 says “Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.” This verse means that if we go against our principles and values, take the contrary stance, we will come to ruin.
Jesus knew their thoughts because they were so radically different. Jesus was kind and merciful; men wanted power and evil. The Pharisees were questioning who Jesus was and where he got his powers from but none of them thought it was from God because of the way He used his power, that is kind and merciful.
Jesus responded to their thoughts by saying that a divided kingdom would be ruined and a house divided will fall. If we go against our values it will come back to haunt us. Divided houses never stand long, they almost always collapse under pressure.
So what does this mean for us? It means that we will come to ruin if we go against who we are and the values that we hold dear. We cannot fight against ourselves and win. Ever. This is why it’s so important for us to know ourselves, value ourselves, and build lives around the people and things that matter most to us.
