There are many benefits to being obedient to God. When we are obedient, we are living in His will and are blessed. We also please God and find peace and joy in our lives.
However, there are also consequences to disobedience. When we disobey God, we grieve Him and bring curses into our lives. We also miss out on His blessings.
Examples of Obedience in the Bible
- When Abraham was about to sacrifice his son Isaac, he showed obedience to God by following His instructions even though it must have been really hard for him to do so (Genesis 22:1-18).
- The Israelites were obedient when they crossed the Red Sea on dry land after Moses had led them there (Exodus 14:15-31).
- Queen Esther obeyed God by going into the king’s presence even though she knew it could cost her life (Esther 4:1-17).
- Jesus was obedient to His Father’s will and went to the cross even though He knew it would mean His death (Luke 22:39-46).
How to be Obedient to God
- Read His Word: The Bible is our instruction manual from God. It tells us what His will is for our lives. In order to be obedient to Him, we need to know what He has said. Spend time reading the Bible every day so that you can be familiar with His voice and know what He wants you to do (Proverbs 6:20-23).
- Pray: Talk to God about your desire to be obedient. Ask Him to help you understand His will and give you the strength to follow it (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
- Obey His commands: When you know what God wants you to do, do it! Don’t let anything (or anyone) keep you from obeying Him. Trust that He knows what is best for you and follow His lead (Joshua 1:9).
- Seek godly counsel: When you’re not sure what God’s will is in a particular situation, seek the advice of mature Christians who can help you figure it out (Proverbs 11:14).
- Be accountable: Find a friend or mentor who will hold you accountable to obeying God. Knowing that someone is checking in on you will help you stay on track (Galatians 6:1-2).
What are the Benefits of Obedience?
- It pleases God: When we obey God, it brings a smile to His face. He is pleased when we submit to His authority and follow His commands (1 John 3:22).
- It protects us: God’s commands are given to us for our own good. Obeying them keeps us from harm and leads us down the path of life (Proverbs 6:23).
- It blesses us: Obedience opens the door for God’s blessings in our lives. When we follow His will, He is able to work in ways we couldn’t even imagine (Proverbs 10:22).
- It brings us joy: There is no greater joy than knowing we are living in a way that is pleasing to our Heavenly Father. When we obey Him, we can have confidence that we are doing His will and that brings true happiness (John 15:10-11).
